Adkins Believes In Home Comforts

Nigel Adkins was pleased to see Saints make the most of their home advantage with a 1-0 win over Reading at St Mary’s.

The gaffer praised the efficiency of his side’s performance with the result secured by Jason Puncheon’s 60th minute strike, whilst a second clean sheet of the season brought extra joy to the fourth win of the campaign.

“I think we dominated the game and were worthy winners with the amount of chances we created and we could have probably put a few more in the back of the net,” he told Saints Player after the game.

“We are good at St Mary’s and the fans get behind the players here and we play a good tempo of football. It was a good 1-0 victory here today.

“We talk all the time about the importance of winning your home games and it’s important to win the games against the teams who are in and around you in the league.

"Winning at home and against a team that are with us in the division is a good result.”

Puncheon’s winner took the winger on to four goals for the season, whilst he was also unfortunate not to have been credited with a strike in the first half too as his header from a corner was ruled out for a questionable infringement.

“It was a perfectly good goal in my opinion,” Adkins stated. “The goalkeeper has pushed Maya who was standing around him, he slipped and Jason is unmarked at the back post where he headed into the back of the net.

“He scored a good goal today and could have had more, maybe he should shoot more often!

"The goal we scored was an excellent one, straight off the training ground – we have got a midfielder dropping off into the hole and have the full-back getting forward so it was an excellent goal.

“He (Puncheon) is good, he has matured and had a good pre-season. Since he has come back it has been a fresh start if you like and he has grasped it with both hands.

"It just shows if you work very hard and adapt to the culture that you are surrounded with you can grow as a player because he has done that.”

The only sour note was the loss of Adam Lallana to an injury before half time which will be assessed before Saints return to action against Sunderland in a fortnight’s time.

“He has picked up a knee injury and as precaution as we always do we have put him in a brace and on crutches,” the gaffer said. “We will let it settle down, assess him tomorrow and take it from there.

“Obviously we haven’t got a game next week but we will work hard through the extended period preparing for the Sunderland game.

“We have got our Christmas party with all the members of staff here at the club tomorrow night, and it will be a little bit better for having won here today.”
