International Round-Up

By SFC Media Wed 27 Mar Club

There were mixed fortunes for the four Saints players in international action yesterday.

It was a good night for Artur Boruc, who helped Poland to a 5-0 win over San Marino in FIFA 2014 World Cup European Qualifying Group H.

Boruc was a relative bystander for most of the match, though he was called upon a minute from time when he raced out of his goal to deny Danilo Rinaldi after the San Marino man had got clear of the Poland defence.

The victory leaves Poland third in Group H, behind leaders Montenegro and second-placed England at the midway point of the qualification process for next summer's finals.

Earlier in the day, Maya Yoshida and Japan were within a point of becoming the first non-hosting nation to qualify for the 2014 World Cup.

The Samurai Blue just needed to avoid defeat in Jordan to seal their place in the finals with two games to spare, but were beaten 2-1 at the King Abdullah Stadium in Amman.

Japan remain top of their qualifying group, and will progress to the finals if they avoid defeat to Australia on 4th June OR Iraq do not win in Oman on the same day.

Midfielder Steven Davis captained Northern Ireland as they took on Israel at Windsor Park in European Qualifying Group F.

However, he could not prevent the Green & White Army slipping to a 2-0 defeat to leave them with just three points from their first five qualifying fixtures.

Gastón Ramírez was drafted into Uruguay's starting line-up for their fixture away to Chile, which was their 11th of the current qualifying campaign.

But he could not help La Celeste avoid a 2-0 defeat in Santiago, and was replaced by Diego Forlan after 69 minutes.

Uruguay now sit sixth in the CONMEBOL qualification table, with the top four progressing to the finals in Brazil and the fifth-placed team going into a play-off against a side from the Asian region.

Nathaniel Clyne, James Ward-Prowse, Calum Chambers, Vegard Forren and Emmanuel Mayuka were also in international action over the weekend and have now returned to Southampton.

Boruc, Yoshida, Davis and Ramírez will now head back to Staplewood ahead of this Saturday's Barclays Premier League game against Chelsea.
