Maya’s respect for Kelvin

Maya Yoshida says Kelvin Davis’s welcoming nature is part of what makes the club captain a popular figure within the Saints squad.

As the eldest statesman in the Southampton ranks, Davis is looked up to by all of the players, and having reached 300 appearances for the team in Sunday’s game at Manchester City, his colleague and current roommate, Maya Yoshida praised the goalkeeper’s all-round contribution to the club.

“I think Kelv is one of the greatest people I know as a player, but also as a character he is friendly and professional,” said Yoshida. “Even though he has been here a long time and with [Artur] Boruc or Fraser [Forster] playing here, he is always positive and good for the club

“For a new player too, when someone comes into the club for the first time, he finds things out for you, and it’s why the club is so welcoming. The first time you go away with the team you have to sing a song in front of the lads and he is always leading that by tapping the glasses on the table.”

As Davis reaches his testimonial year with Saints, the club captain is held in high regard by all of the players whether they’re young talents breaking through, or more experienced like Yoshida.

“I’m very, very happy to see him reach his 300th appearance for Southampton because I think he’ll be here for the rest of his life,” said the Japanese international.

“He’s a funny guy too, but I can’t tell you any of the stories that he is behind!”
