Stuart Armstrong helped Scotland to a thumping UEFA Nations League victory away to Albania tonight, keeping them on course for promotion from League C.

The Saints midfielder started and played more than an hour in Shkoder, as Alex McLeish’s side won 4-0 to go level with Israel at the top of the Group 1 standings.

Scotland’s goals came via Ryan Fraser and a Steven Fletcher penalty in the first half, with James Forrest adding another two after the interval.

Scotland will now face Israel, at Hampden Park, on Tuesday, knowing victory will see them finish top of their group and advance to League B. Anything less and Israel will edge them out.

Elsewhere, Saints defender Cédric celebrated qualification for the Nations League finals after Portugal earned a 0-0 draw in Italy to ensure they will top League A’s Group 3.

Cédric did not feature in San Siro, though, with the full-back an unused substitute.

Earlier in the day, Mario Lemina, who had been struggling with a knock, was also an unused sub for Gabon, as they lost 1-0 at home to Mali in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

While the result ensured Mali a place in next year’s finals, Lemina and Gabon still retain hopes of joining them, but will need to win away to Burundi in their final group match, which takes place in March, to do so.
