Southampton's youngsters were forced to settle for a share of the spoils on the road at Norwich, having been denied from the penalty spot late on.

A second half substitute, Enzo Robise had cut inside from the right, and was illegally taken down, before Callum Slattery stepped up to take the resulting spot kick.

The midfielder struck it well enough, but Norwich stopper Billy Johnson guessed correctly, and parried, while also thwarting Jonathan Afolabi on the follow up.

The point means Saints remain in pursuit of Premier League 2 top spot, but will ensure they stay inside the play-off places, extending their unbeaten league run to four games.

Saints youngsters spent the majority of the first half in possession, besides a five minute spell where the experienced Nelson Oliveira forced a superb one-handed save from Jack Rose.

The shot changed direction sharply, looping off the boot of Tom O'Connor, meaning Rose had to shift his weight awkwardly, but still managed to tip the effort onto the post.

The visitors had plenty of opportunities for an opener thereafter. Slattery tried to make a breakthrough from distance, but multiple efforts were charged down, while the ever influential Marcus Barnes too tested Johnson.

An impressive first half was rounded off by a double chance for Yan Valery and Barnes, both striking low in quick succession, and both meeting resistance from Johnson.

The second period was less eventful, but presented chances for Saints nonetheless. Harry Hamblin was nearly the beneficiary of a goalmouth scramble, after Tyreke Johnson's clever in-swinging free-kick caused confusion in the area.

Again Johnson collected, before his biggest test arrived in the 85th minute. Young Robise was fouled, minutes after coming on, but Slattery, usually so clinical from the spot, struck his penalty at a comfortable enough height for the Canaries stopper.

Afolabi attempted to stick in the rebound, but again Saints were denied. The hosts, who were outplayed for the most part, could have in fact won it at the death, sensing opportunity to snatch maximum points in stoppage time, but Alfie Payne was way off target from five yards out, under sufficient pressure from Aaron O'Driscoll.
