Southampton’s youngsters concluded their Under-18s Premier League home campaign with a 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa at Staplewood on Saturday morning.

Villa’s brightest spark Jaden Philogene-Bidace netted a first-half brace, before Harrison Sohna delivered the killer blow in the 87th minute to seal all three points.

Christian Norton was once again on the scoresheet for Saints - his penalty sandwiched between each of Philogene-Bidace’s goals - but the solitary strike wasn’t enough for Paul Hardyman’s side to earn anything from the game.

Saints remain in the league's fourth spot, but will likely need a win from their final encounter of the season to stand a chance of finishing inside the coveted top four. They'll close the season out with a trip to Norwich at the end of April.

A half of mixed fortunes meant that the hosts went into the break trailing.

Philogene-Bidace delivered both of the visitor’s first-half goals, opening the scoring within five minutes before finding a second just before half-time.

The first appeared to take Saints stopper Jack Bycroft by surprise, with the winger drifting into space 25 yards out, and firing speculatively at goal, managing to steer it just inside the post.

The home side livened up for a short period following, and after Kornelius Hansen was taken out by Akos Onodi inside the box, up stepped Norton to despatch from the penalty spot. It was cooly taken, chipping straight down the middle of goal.

But parity was short-lived. Philogene-Bidace was a danger all half, and made good on his threat yet again in the 41st minute. Allan Tchaptchet was exposed one on one, and tried to close the angle, but wasn’t able to prevent the shot which flew beyond Bycroft from eight yards.

There were few chances of note during a cagey second 45. Villa were happy to concede possession, preserve their lead, and play on the break, while Saints were in desperate search of an equaliser.

And it nearly arrived 20 minutes from time. Substitute Caleb Watts switched the ball to Hansen wide right, and a sublime first touch took him past Clarets captain Charlie McConnachie, but he couldn’t find the finish, dragging his shot well wide.

Moments later, the visitors were threatening at the opposite end with their substitute forward Dimitri Sea. Seamas Keogh was well placed to head his initial effort off the line, before his second try was diverted marginally over.

The final 10 minutes opened up for Saints; they pressed higher and created openings. Watts was making a difference in midfield, linking play, and provided a wicked cross for Norton in the 80th minute, which just evaded the striker's run.

Their best chance of the half arrived in the 82nd minute, and fell to No.10 Roland Idowu. All the hard work was done by Hansen down the left, who forced a great save from Onodi, before the rebound fell kindly to Idowu centrally, who blasted wrecklessly over.

Villa’s Ben Guy hit the post late on, before Sohna sealed the points with a back post header from a free-kick, turning home Jack Birch’s floated delivery.
