Girls' and Women's Football

Premier League (PL) Girls’ Programme

The PL Girls programme currently works within 10 secondary schools around Southampton offering girls the chance to take part in introductory football, learning new skills and progressing over time. The aim of the programme is to get more girls into playing football aged 11+, helping with the overall development of the female game. The programme also intends on increasing the number of female coaches and officials by putting them through various qualifications.

Separate to the school provision, the programme is working closely with various local grassroots clubs in Southampton to not only provide an exit route for those that have come through the school satellites, but also to help local grass roots clubs to setup and improve their female provision.

The programme provides a coach to help mentor a local grass roots coach, with the intention that when the session is up and running, the programme can pass the session back to the club to enter into the local girls youth leagues.

SSE Wildcats is designed to get more 5-11-year-old girls into football! The Football Association and SSE have teamed up to launch a new initiative, SSE Wildcats, designed to inspire girls aged between 5-11 to be involved in the sport.

SSE Wildcats Girls’ Football Clubs will provide girls with regular opportunities to play football and take part in organised sessions in a fun and engaging environment created exclusively for girls.

The clubs will run from spring through to summer on a weekly basis with activities such as football-fitness sessions on offer for those bringing children too.

The initiative follows the launch The FA’s Gameplan for Growth, which outlined the target of doubling girls’ participation in the sport by 2020.

Each SSE Wildcats club will be run in conjunction with local County FAs and utilise qualified coaches and local facilities to offer girls a location nearby where they can get involved.
